Admission Requirements to ELA

Admission to ELA is processed through UBT admission office, as ELA is the gate to UBT. All applicants must follow UBT’s admission procedures. Kindly check the following link:

Students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements for admission to UBT are admitted automatically to ELA.  

Online admission steps:

  • Filling and submitting the admission application online.

  • Providing the following documents:

    • Original copy of High School Certificate (or General Secondary Education Certificate or its equivalent).
    • Good Conduct Certificate.
    • Copy of Saudi National ID card for Saudis, or Iqamas for non-Saudis
    • Copy of the result of the aptitude test.
    • 4 photos (4x6) with a scanned copy on a CD.
    • Medical report with the required medical tests.
    • Original copy of TOEFL or IELTS exams certificates.


  • Certificates from outside Saudi Arabia need to be original and approved by the proper authority in the issuing country.

  • Students are exempted from studying English at ELA if they demonstrate their English language proficiency by obtaining:

  • A minimum TOEFL score of 59 on the iBT; or 5.5 on the IELTS.

  • Upon admission to UBT, students take one of the required standardized placement tests to determine their proper level.

Placement Tests

ELA utilizes a battery of standardized tests designed to measure students’ English language proficiency and academic English ability, so as to ensure accurate placement of students in its six-level English language program; and to determine whether their English is adequate for full-time study at UBT. 

A test schedule is announced online (UBT Website) by ELA and the admission office, at the end of each session and during the registration week. Each student is given a UBT ID which he/ she has to present on the placement test date and location, in addition to his/ her Saudi national ID or Iqama.

ELA’s Placement Tests include:

  1. A Writing Test.
  2. A Speaking Test
  3. A 45-minute Adaptive English Placement Test which may include:

A. The Cambridge Placement Test:
The Cambridge Placement Test (CPT) is an online computer adaptive English test for placing candidates in appropriate English language levels. It was developed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, which has close links to the development of the CEFR(Common European Framework of Reference for Language Lerning) . Online demo:

B. The Oxford University Placement Test:
The Oxford Placement Test is an online computer adaptive test that measures applicants’ ability to communicate in English; as well as their grammar and vocabulary mastery. It tests either British or American English; and accurately measures candidates understanding of meaning in a conversation. It reports scores on a 0 to 9 scale which is aligned to the CEFR. C. A two-hour computerized TOEFL-like exam to ensure adequate mastery of the English language.
This exam is a computerized test that measures students ability to use and understand English in colleges or universities. It tests listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills.
The TOEFL iBT test measures the ability to use and understand English at the university level, and it evaluates how well the student combines his listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

Students’ Attendance

Attendance is mandatory for all courses delivered at ELA. All instructors are obliged to use the Opera system for attendance. Students are expected to attend all classes
Students have a maximum absence limit with a legitimate excuse for four times during a session. Once the student reaches the fifth absence he/she will be considered as an AF (Absent Fail) student.
